Mild winters, warm summers and beautiful scenery make Capitan an ideal place for retirees. Capitan offers all the basic amenities to live comfortably on a fixed income. Many artisans have flocked to Capitan for its inspiring and unique landscapes, history and residents. The mountain resort town of Ruidoso, offering skiing in the winter, horse racing in the summer, and year-round events, is only 21 miles south on scenic State Highway 48. The historic town of Lincoln, where the infamous Billy the Kid made his last escape, is only 12 miles east on U.S. Highway 380. Carrizozo, located 20 miles to the west is a thriving Arts community.
